Five Days in London (December 2022)

And I said, “Listen, oh, I know it’s been a long, long year
But I think we should go and get you out of here”
I’ll go anywhere, anywhere with you
— Maggie Rogers

Last year’s Christmas wasn’t very fun. My mom found herself in an absolutely horrific caretaking facility, so we drove to Chicago to “rescue” grandma and find her a better place to live. While Dan and I dealt with my mom’s housing, an active shooter situation occurred outside the movie theater where our children were. They went on lockdown. Nobody died. We moved my mom into a beautiful assisted living facility (she died in March). But it was a long week.

So this year I really wanted to escape our memories (I know, I know you can’t actual escape the past, but . . . ) and go somewhere beautiful. Originally, we had planned on Death Valley and the Grand Canyon. But the kids wanted London, as they still remember the city fondly from our trip there in 2018 (you can see photos from our past trip here).

I wasn’t sure London would appear as magical now that they are all older, but figured it was worth a try. Plus, during law school I spent a semester in London and since then it’s always been one of my favorite places.
