10 Happy Things for September

HAPPY SEPTEMBER!

I hope everyone had a great summer!

I took two months off of work to travel and spend time with my family (which was amazing), but now I'm glad to be back home and I can't wait for all of the gorgeous weddings and photography sessions this fall!

10 HAPPY THINGS

As always, this list is pretty random, but hopefully something on it will bring you joy!
-------
1. These temporary art installations on the National Mall look pretty cool.  (Has anyone checked them out yet?). Also, the new Lego discovery center sounds fun.
-------
2. Great Gerwig's 10 Favorite books (I love so many of these - esp. The Idiot, Alice Munro, Americanah). Also, the Best Music of 2023 So Far (Pitchfork).

Currently Reading. Watching. Listening (podcast). Listening (music).
-------
3. My new favorite cookbook (because I'm lazy).
------
4. Photos and stories from our summer travels are up on my blog - Malta, Venice, The Dolomites (Italy), Denver/Aspen, and Dollywood/Pigeon Forge (wow, it all seems rather random when put together in one sentence).
-------
5.  NPR's monthly podcast round ups (bookmark).
-------
6. I hate that I live in a world where I have to say this explicitly (because shouldn't such things be assumed?), but hopefully everyone knows that I take pride in photographing people of all gender identities, sexual orientations, races, countries, sizes, ages, and everything else.

Unless you are mean, I really really do not like to photograph mean people.

-------
7. I was bored in dutyfree this summer (so.many.airports!) and decided to try this trendy body creme and now I'm totally addicted (it really is amazing).
-------
8. Eye-Mama - photos of what motherhood looks like. (More here).
-------
9. 52 Essential apple recipes.
------
10. I recently blogged some new wedding, engagement, and family sessions. Click here to check it all out (if you're considering hiring me as a photographer I HIGHLY RECOMMEND perusing my work first).
------

BUSINESS ANNOUNCEMENT -
FROM NOW ON 2% OF MY NET PROFITS WILL GO TO THE ACLU & PLANNED PARENTHOOD

I'll be honest, I'm not very happy about the recent SC decisions. NOT HAPPY AT ALL. And I've been struggling with how to address this. I'm still working on answers (any ideas?). But at the very least, I can start publicly giving money to causes I care about. I know 2% isn't a ton of money, but at least it's a start.

Do you have causes you care about? This is a reminder that I offer a pay-it-forward discount for families (see question #22) where you receive $50 off the cost of your session if you give the money to charity.

I also offer a similar, but larger discount for weddings clients. Contact me for details.

COUPLES & FAMILIES - I AM BOOKED SOLID UNTIL THE END OF NOVEMBER.

I do, however, have openings in December and am now booking into January (when my rates decrease). More info on my rates here.

Not sure what a December or January session would look like? How about a holiday cookie baking session? Or street hockey? Or some family time in the park? Or nerf guns in the backyarad?

FOR WEDDINGS, 2023 IS FULL & I'M BOOKING INTO 2024.

If you're thinking of eloping or planning a mirco-wedding, please get in touch - I have lots of advice/suggestions!

Also, if you're interested in wedding venues/locations, here are some of my favorites.

RECENT REVIEWS

As cliched as it sounds, reviews mean the world to small businesses like mine - so THANK YOU again to everyone who wrote one!!

______

I just got my final photos from Darcy today, and they're so amazing, I had to leave a review right away! First off, she was exactly what we were looking for. We had some specific priorities when looking for a photographer, and she met all of them. Our priorities were:
1. Finding a photographer who we'd be at ease with for photos. We're two introverts who don't like being the center of attention. She made us feel so comfortable when we first interviewed her and the day of the wedding.
2. Having more candid shots than just typical posed photos. She told us that was her style too, and she definitely delivered on that. Of course, she did great traditional group shots too.
. . . .
The day of the wedding she was spectacular. We had rain before the ceremony that slightly derailed our picture plans, but she pivoted quickly. She still got almost all our pictures done either before or shortly after the ceremony so we could enjoy almost all of the cocktail hour with our guests.
Now, that I have the photos, and I'm so happy with them. There are so many amazing ones to choose from. Thank you so much Darcy! - Rachel

Our wedding is May of next year, and we did engagement pictures with Darcy last week. Now, my fiancé and I are NOT the type of people to hold hands or stare into each other’s eyes, so I was a little worried about how things would go.
Darcy is beyond amazing. She made everything feel so natural, and we had a lot of fun the entire time. When I got the pictures yesterday, I was BLOWN away. I am so impressed, and now even more excited for the big day :) I cannot recommend her enough!! - Elizabeth
