I was amazed that what I needed to survive could be carried on my back. And, most surprising of all, that I could carry it.

As any long-time reader of this blog knows (does this blog have long-time readers?) - I love a vacation. Especially vacations that include road trips and hiking. So this summer our family spent 3.5 weeks driving from Seattle to San Diego (with several detours in between).

In all honesty, this was somewhat of a tough vacation. It’s such a cliche, but traveling with teenagers is hard (the kids are now 12, 14, and 15) - nothing ever seems to make them happy. And their phone addictions drive me a little crazy. Originally, I had planned on a lot of camping because: camping = no data access = quality family time. But Dan had a lot of unexpected work come up, so we needed to reroute continually for data access (and find last minute hotel rooms). Luckily, we still managed to squeeze in two overnight backpacking trips and a few nights camping in my favorite California state park.

Oh well, even if things didn’t go as planned. It was still great to get away and enjoy some time together as a family (the days are long but the years are short). Here’s how things went down:

[**Note - the irony of the above quote is that we checked 8 bags (8!!!) and everyone also had a huge carry-on. We couldn’t even fit in an SUV, we needed a minivan and we were still pretty squished.]
