That Time We Rented a Private Island in the Chesapeake Bay . . . (Cape Charles, VA)

Freedom or community, community or freedom. One must decide the way one wants to live.

I’m somewhat of an airbnb addict. When stressed, I relax by scouring the internet for cool new adventures and places to explore. Hence, one cold day in December, I discovered that you can rent a private island in the Chesapeake Bay (how cool is that)?

The listing made clear that the island’s accommodations are rustic - no electricity and collected rainwater for showers. But the cottage has a working kitchen with two refrigerators (powered by gas) and and it sleeps 12 people. So, back in the comforts of late December, I convinced our good friends to join us on the island for Labor Day weekend (7 kids, 4 adults, and 1 dog) - what could go wrong?

After months of planing (scratch that, after months of doing other things and forgetting entirely about this upcoming trip), our time of departure finally arrived. Labor Day is always a tough time for us, the kids go back to school right afterwards and usually, by this last weekend of summer, everyone is pretty cranky and sick of each other. Needless to say, the private island didn’t sound that exciting anymore.

But them, some magic occurred . . .

On the downside, the bugs were bad, and the nights were hot. On the upside, the kids kayaked and crabbed. We ate oysters, fished, and swam all day. Everyone went to bed at sunset and we woke to the sound of kids playing poker in the main room. All in all a great way to spend three days! (Though by the end of the trip, we were all ready to get back to “real” life).
